ANTHOS’26: advancing safe and sustainable flame retardants

From 9 to 11 March 2026, the ANTHOS’26 conference brought together key European stakeholders in Vienna to discuss the future of safe and sustainable materials. Hosted at the TWELVE Conference Center and organised by BioNanoNet, the event gathered research projects, industry representatives, policymakers, and scientists working at the forefront of advanced materials and Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD).

As one of the co-organising Horizon Europe projects, BIOSAFIRE actively contributed to the programme, reinforcing its role in the development of innovative, bio-based flame retardants aligned with sustainability and safety principles.

A collaborative platform for SSbD innovation

ANTHOS’26, the second edition following the 2024 event, was designed to bridge the gap between stakeholder needs and scientific solutions. The programme combined “needs sessions” — where regulators, industry and implementers shared challenges — with “solutions sessions”, where EU-funded projects presented tools, methodologies, and results.

This structure fosters dialogue across the value chain and supports the implementation of the SSbD framework in real-world applications, from early-stage research to industrial deployment.

BIOSAFIRE contributions: talks, posters and scientific exchange

During the conference, BIOSAFIRE showcased its latest progress through multiple contributions:

  • Presentations highlighting the project’s advances in developing safer and more sustainable flame retardant systems
  • Scientific posters, presenting key research results on bio-based additives and SSbD methodologies
  • Session involvement, contributing to discussions on how EU projects can address stakeholder needs

In particular, BIOSAFIRE researchers presented work on:

  • Fire performance of thermosetting resins enhanced with bio-based additives
  • Application of the Joint Research Centre’s SSbD framework to flame retardant development

These contributions underline BIOSAFIRE’s commitment to combining high fire performance with reduced environmental and health impacts.

👉 The scientific posters presented at ANTHOS’26 are available on the BIOSAFIRE website, where readers can explore the project’s results in more detail.

What is BIOSAFIRE all about?

BIOSAFIRE will develop and upscale innovative products upgrading nature’s best fire retardants (FRs): lignins and tannins. To ensure that these novel products are safe and sustainable, while retaining their desired technological functionality, they will be thoroughly assessed by applying the SSbD framework at different stages of their development and the results will be iteratively fed into the further design and optimisation of the technologies. Involving the full material value chain, these flame retardants will be upscaled to TRL7 and demonstrated in five different applications.

Excited for the journey ahead and the positive impact we’ll create together!
