Featured in The Innovation Platform

  •  April 2, 2026

BIOSAFIRE is featured in the latest edition of The Innovation Platform, with a dedicated profile published in the “Sustainable Planet” section (pp. 228–229).

The article presents the project’s approach to improving fire safety through the development of sustainable, bio-based materials inspired by natural compounds. In particular, BIOSAFIRE focuses on lignin and tannins—naturally occurring substances with inherent flame-retardant properties—to develop safer alternatives for industrial applications.

Advancing fire-safe, sustainable materials

As outlined in the feature, BIOSAFIRE is working to scale up the production of innovative flame-retardant solutions starting from pilot plants, with applications spanning sectors such as construction, marine, railway, home appliances, and wood coatings. With 22 partners across Europe, the project brings together complementary expertise to support the transition from natural raw materials to high-performance industrial products.

The article also highlights the project’s alignment with the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework, integrating safety, environmental sustainability, and societal considerations throughout the development process.

From research to market uptake

Particular attention is given to BIOSAFIRE’s efforts to support industrial uptake. Through techno-economic analysis, stakeholder engagement, and data-sharing strategies, the project addresses key challenges along the value chain, contributing to the conditions needed for broader market adoption of bio-based flame retardants.

The three main pillars of BIOSAFIRE—material development, interoperability and decision-making, and implementation of the SSbD framework—are presented as key elements supporting both innovation and scalability.

Looking ahead

The feature also outlines the next steps of the project, including the design of an industrial pilot plant and further assessment of value chains. These activities aim to provide robust technical and economic evidence to support implementation at scale.

Overall, the article situates BIOSAFIRE within the broader effort to develop safer and more sustainable material solutions across multiple industrial sectors.

What is BIOSAFIRE all about?

BIOSAFIRE will develop and upscale innovative products upgrading nature’s best fire retardants (FRs): lignins and tannins. To ensure that these novel products are safe and sustainable, while retaining their desired technological functionality, they will be thoroughly assessed by applying the SSbD framework at different stages of their development and the results will be iteratively fed into the further design and optimisation of the technologies. Involving the full material value chain, these flame retardants will be upscaled to TRL7 and demonstrated in five different applications.

Excited for the journey ahead and the positive impact we’ll create together!
