At BIOSAFIRE, we believe that innovation in Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) can only be achieved through collaborative expertise. That’s why we have established three dedicated working groups, each aligned with a key pillar of our project, to ensure seamless integration of material innovation, decision-making, and sustainability assessments.
- Pillar 1: Material Development. This working group focuses on developing bio-based flame retardants (FRs) as safer and more sustainable alternatives to conventional FRs. Our experts are working on extraction and purification techniques to replace harmful substances with lignin- and tannin-based solutions.
- Pillar 2: Interoperability & Decision-Making. To effectively integrate SSbD principles, this group is testing the implementation of a decision support toolset that guides early process design, ensuring safety and sustainability are embedded from the start. The team is also working on advancing Inherently Safer Design (ISD) methodologies.
- Pillar 3: SSbD Framework. The final working group is dedicated to refining the SSbD framework using a tiered approach for safety, environmental, and socio-economic assessments. Each working group includes partners from leading academic institutions, research centers, and industry, collaborating to enhance decision-making and maximize the impact of BIOSAFIRE.
Stay tuned as we share insights from our working groups and their contributions to advancing Safe and Sustainable by Design!
